The Fourth Gospel
Text of the Fourth Gospel, King James Version
The author of the fourth gospel used a variety of terms to conceal his identity: “the disciple whom Jesus loved”, “other disciple”, “the other disciple, whom Jesus loved”, etc. These refer to the author of the forth gospel with Jesus at the supper (13:21-28), with Jesus at his trial (18:12-18), with Jesus at the cross (19:25-27), when he went to the tomb of Jesus on resurrection morning (20:1-10), and at the third appearance of Jesus after the resurrection (21:2-24). And the closing verses of the gospel make it clear that the designation “Jesus loved” was a term that the author of the fourth gospel applied to himself.
